The HarWASTing project
The HarWASTing project (Valorisation of harvested agroforestry biomass waste as feedstock for value-added bio-based solutions as a green development pathway) is a Horizon Europe funded project that aims to strengthen the rural bioeconomy by promoting bioeconomy and circular economy business models that efficiently utilize underexploited biomass resources.
Through advanced technologies such as Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) and Pressurized Hot Water Extraction (PHWE), the project converts biomass into high-value products with zero waste. Its primary output, hydrochar, is used to produce hybrid wood-hydrochar panels designed for applications such as fire protection and electromagnetic shielding, with promising potential in the construction sector and beyond.
The project is further supported by an AI-powered digital tool for feedstock forecasting and a newly developed digital platform to facilitate commercialization.
Harwasting digital tools
(to be developed)
Feedstock Availability Forecasting tool (FAF)
Providing information about potential biomass wastes availability by using AI models that will predict quantities and availability time based on remote sensing data.
HarWASTing Collaborative Digital Platform (HCDP)
An innovative marketplace and business facilitator between a digital space for sharing and updating useful information to promote the revalorization of biomass wastes at a European level. It will be the first online marketplace for hydrochar.
Digital Product Passport (DPP)
For developed bio-adhesives and hybrid panels, providing end-user’s product information regarding their lifecycle analysis along the whole value cycle, empowering consumers and businesses to make well-informed purchasing decisions and supporting public authorities in ensuring legal compliance.

HARWASTING Latest News
We are thrilled to officially launch the HarWASTing project website! Here you will be able to discover everything about our project: ...
Hydrochar is a “carbon extract or concentrate” obtained from lignocellulosic biomass by separating out the water. As a renewable intermediate product, its availability and use in the manufacture of more sustainable goods will be boosted by the digital platform implemented by HarWASTing
- Michael Renz
HarWASTing promotes sustainable innovation by turning agro-forestry residues into advanced bio-based products. Using cutting-edge technologies and circular bioeconomy principles, it adds value to underused resources, fostering rural development while reducing environmental impact.
